The Gottman Institute found that for every one negative comment or statement, five should be exchanged. This is described as making “regular deposits” to each other’s “emotional bank accounts.”

2. Argue assuming your partner has good intentions.

Essentially, this is a call to resist blaming or shutting your partner out. Argue with an open mind and a heart for a mutually beneficial agreement. 

3. Celebrate your lives together.

Professor Eli Finkel, of Northwestern’s Relationships and Motivation Lab, found that happy couples celebrate life together. Their interactions are enthusiastic and engaged.

4. Get more rest.

A study from the University of California at Berkeley discovered that couples who got poor sleep argued more and experienced less relationship satisfaction.

5. Reflect on your beginnings.

While studying 124 married people, Dr. James J. Ponzetti of the University of British Columbia, found that reflecting often on why you married affirms and solidifies your union.

6. Quickies, rather than marathon intimacy, is good.

Therapist, Kat Van Kirk, author of The Married Sex Solution, advises that couples trade long, involved lovemaking for more short, focused intimate periods. This keeps the spark alive and inspires longer lovemaking later.
