Frequently asked questions

Here are my most frequently asked questions.

  • I do not have in person sessions.

I offer all sessions online through a secure, user-friendly video platform called Doxy.me or we can use Facetime.

This means no more dealing with the hassle of commuting, traffic, or parking. Instead, you can enjoy the convenience and comfort of having therapy sessions from your own space.

Online therapy offers greater flexibility in scheduling, making it easier to fit our sessions into your busy life. It’s all about making the process as smooth and stress-free as possible for you.

  • Individual Therapy Session (50 Minutes): $200

Couples Counseling Assessment (50 minutes): $250

  • I am not an in-network provider with any insurance company.

However, as Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, my services qualify for patient reimbursement under most PPO insurance plans as an "out-of-network" provider. I am licensed in California, Texas, Vermont, South Carolina, and Florida.

If you have a PPO, I can provide you with a superbill (a detailed receipt) for you to submit to your insurance for reimbursement.

Alternatively, I work with Thrizer, a company that can explain your benefits and handle the paperwork for you.

You may also be able to reimburse yourself for payment of my services using a Medical Spending Account.

HMO plans do not cover my services, as they typically only authorize treatment for mental health illnesses and do not reimburse for “marriage counseling,” “couples counseling,” or “relationship counseling.” HMO plans require you to see someone within their network, and I am not in any insurance network. You can find a separate telephone number for "Behavioral Health Services" on the back of your medical ID card. Most plans allow you to self-refer, and your insurance plan can provide you with a list of providers in your area who are in-network.

Note: Kaiser is its own entity and does not have any PPO provisions.

  • It depends. Everyone is unique. I’ll be able to be more specific after our first session.

    For Individuals:
Typically I will suggest that you see me weekly for 4-6 weeks. This allows us to get to know each other, build trust and rapport, and hopefully relieve some of the pain that brought you in to see me.

After 4-6 sessions, I like to discuss with you how you think therapy is going. At this point we can keep things the way they are or change to bi-weekly appointments or whatever else works for you or fits your budget. I leave it up to you to decide how long you want to see me.

Often, clients will see me for several months and then decide to take a break; later, as they feel the need, they will come for tune-up sessions. I am very flexible, and I keep the door open for clients who I have seen in the past. Life is not easy even at the best of times, and life transitions (such as a birth, a death, a new job, ending of a relationship, or a family crisis) can be especially taxing. A lot of people find it helpful to have therapist there for support and guidance when they feel derailed by life events.

    For Couples:
We’ll start with an initial intake session together. Following that, I will have individual sessions with each of you and ask you to complete a brief, private relationship status questionnaire. Using this information and your input, I will create a specific treatment plan tailored to help you reach your goals.

My approach to couples counseling is that it should be focused and goal-oriented, not a lengthy process—unless we are dealing with significant issues like infidelity. As your couples counselor, my job is to assess the dynamics at play, develop a plan to move you forward, and then gradually step back. The goal is to leave you feeling confident and equipped to use the tools you’ve learned to maintain and strengthen your relationship on your own.

  • I'll ask some questions to get a better idea of where you are in life and where you want to be.  By the end of our first session, I'll let you know if I think counseling would be helpful and approximately how many sessions it will be.  There is no sales pitch and no pressure to make a follow up appointment.

  • Yes!
I am licensed to practice in all of California, Texas, South Carolina, and Vermont.

For individuals outside these states who are dealing with the aftermath of infidelity, I offer Infidelity Recovery Coaching. To learn more, please visit CarolineMadden.com.

  • You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least one (1) business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
